Young Athletes & Injuries

As an adolescent our bones lengthen and connecting tissue stretches. Both boys and girls experience decreased flexibility. This time is often described as "that awkward age". Agility and motor coordination often doesn't measure up to the demands of young, fast and forceful activity. Especially high schoolers participating in sports are injured on a regular basis. Statistically, in each season of high school athletics, nearly half of all teen athletes are injured at least once. Injuries from falls and collisions can be acute or mild. From cuts, scrapes and bruises, to serious injuries such as fractures and sprained ligaments. Many chronic injuries from repetitive joint action can cause continual pain in either the neck, shoulders, elbows, knees or ankles. At times more than one area of the body can be affected.

Adjustments of the young, developing adolescent spine and manipulation of surrounding areas has a two-fold benefit. It is both preventive and curative. When the spine is properly aligned and muscles are not stressed, strength and agility increases. When the spine is aligned, falls, collisions and abrupt twisting are less likely to occur.

Injuries are command and unfortunate, but pain can be alleviated and permanent damage can be avoided with chiropractic treatment, sometimes alone. In some extreme cases, physical therapy may be necessary, in conjunction with chiropractic care, exercise and stretching
