Hailing from traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is rooted in the belief that the body’s systems work in harmony and a disruption of this harmony is what allows pain and illness to arise.  With its unique perspective on health, TCM is able to address a variety of health concerns, both acute and chronic, for the young and old alike.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, sterile needles to facilitate the body’s ability to heal itself.  In the broadest sense, acupuncture is able to reduce pain, reduce inflammation, and restore homeostasis.  While the complete picture of how acupuncture works is not fully understood, the known mechanisms through which acupuncture works include increasing circulation, creating “micro-traumas” to prompt the body to heal, releasing endorphins to work as natural pain killers, and altering hormone secretion to reduce stress.
While each person will experience the “needling” differently, the sensations should always be tolerable and fleeting.  It is also important to note that the use of needles is not necessary to achieve the desired benefits.  There are several non-needle techniques that can be used in addition to or in place of the needling techniques.  This flexibility of treatment modality insures that everyone, regardless of age or comfort level, is able to experience the healing benefits of acupuncture.

Continuing on with its ability to be completely individualized the treatment plans vary from person to person.  The duration and frequency of treatments are based on the severity and duration of the complaint, as well as the overall health of the person.  Once the desired results have been achieved, it is encouraged that the person continues acupuncture to maintain proper function and balance in the body.  Acupuncture is a great compliment to chiropractic care, massage, exercise, and nutrition as a part of a healthy lifestyle.
